چکیده

In this paper we proposed a visual representation model for motion direction selectivity in the Superior Colliculus (SC) with a fuzzy neural networks system. The SC is a midbrain nucleus that contains a number of horizontally oriented cellular layers receiving and integrating information from the visual, auditory and somatosensory systems. The discharge of cells in the superficial layer of the SC is tightly linked to the direction of visual motion. The availability of a biologically plausible computational model of the SC may open the door for the modeling of cognitive interactions with visual sensory systems. We have simulated the model and the outputs are in line with those observed physiologically.

The influence of sustained selective attention on stimulus selectivity in macaque visual area MT.

Remarkable alterations of perception during long-lasting attentional processes have been described in several recent studies. Although these findings have gained much interest, almost nothing is known about the modulation of neuronal responses during sustained attention. Therefore, we investigated the effect of prolonged selective attention on neuronal feature selectivity. Awake macaque monkeys...

Modeling the self-organization of directional selectivity in the primary visual cortex

A model is proposed to demonstrate how neurons in the primary visual cortex could self-organize to represent the direction of motion. The model is based on a temporal extension of the Self-Organizing Map where neurons act as leaky integrators. The map is trained with moving Gaussian inputs, and it develops a retinotopic map with orientation columns that divide into areas of opposite direction s...

Flexibility of Sensory Representations in Prefrontal Cortex Depends on Cell Type

Discrimination tasks require processing, interpreting, and linking sensory information to the appropriate motor response. We report that neurons in prefrontal cortex (PFC) represent visual motion with precision comparable to cortical neurons at early stages of motion processing, and readily adapt this representation to behavioral context. We found that direction selectivity, recorded while the ...

Neural Mechanisms of Cortical Motion Computation Based on a Neuromorphic Sensory System

The visual cortex analyzes motion information along hierarchically arranged visual areas that interact through bidirectional interconnections. This work suggests a bio-inspired visual model focusing on the interactions of the cortical areas in which a new mechanism of feedforward and feedback processing are introduced. The model uses a neuromorphic vision sensor (silicon retina) that simulates ...

Directional Selectivity

Directional selectivity refers to a neuron’s ability to produce substantially different responses for stimulus motions of different direction. A directionally selective (DS) cell will fire many spikes in response to object motion in one direction (the preferred direction) while responding weakly, if at all, for motion in the opposite (null) direction. This directional “trigger feature” is often...
